Abstract

In the present dissertation, the process- and material-related fundamentals of laser micro polishing of metals with pulsed laser radiation are investigated with the materials TiAl6V4, X37CrMoV5-1 and Al Zn5Mg3Cu. The investigations aimed to determine how the material properties and the process parameters influence the surface topography after laser micro polishing qualitatively and quantitatively. It is identified that the essential key parameters during polishing are the maximum temperature and the melt duration, which significantly influence the smoothing of the surface and mainly depend on the fluence and the pulse duration. The melt duration can be prolonged by the use of additional cw laser radiation for preheating of the surface, whereby a lower roughness is achieved. Material-physical processes during cooling of the surface, for example the formation of martensite or a step-structure, mainly increase the micro roughness. Some process parameters only have a small or even no influence on the surface roughness. They can be adapted in such a way that a high processing speed and at the same time a low heat input into the material is achieved. Beside the basic investigations, laser micro polishing of three-dimensional freeform surfaces is examined. Based on the results, the use of a CAD-CAM process chain for laser micro polishing of such surfaces is demonstrated for the first time.
