Correlation based classification of complex PRI modulation types
Abstract
Classification of the pulse repetition interval (PR!) modulation type is an important task in electronic warfare. Correct determination of an emitter's PR! modulation provides significant knowledge about the observed radar and facilitates its identification, thus improving the functionality of an electronic warfare system. Several methods have been proposed in the literature for identifying standard PR! modulation types, which are constant, jittered, dwell & switch, stagger, sliding, and wobulated. The last two types, i.e. sliding and wobulated, are also called complex and the identification of their subtypes, i.e. sawtooth, triangle, sine, and saturated sine, remains unsolved. This paper addresses the classification of these complex PR! modulation subtypes. With the ability to discriminate between different complex modulations, different emitters or emitter modes can be distinguished as well. The performance of the proposed classification algorithm is demonstrated using simulated signals.
