Research for adaptive assembly
Abstract
Turbulent influences affecting manufacturing demand adaptable manufacturing and assembly systems. As a result of increasing market dynamics, assembly is affected the most by the product's customization and short delivery. The European manufacturing research initiative "Manufuture" is oriented towards adaption and knowledge-based management. Products become more complex and the process of customization is still going on. Fast ramp-up and high capability are requirements of industrial practice. Research seems to be too academic in the field of assembly. There will be a strong change in the assembly of the future. It is caused by the integration of 3D engineering and design, product data management, and also by the implementation of digital factory tools for digital manufacturing engineering. Factory life cycle management systems can be used successfully to permanently adapt assembly and to optimize the capacity utilization. This paper is concerned with trends of assembly systems and assembly management towards scalability, configurability and the implementation of a digital assembly environment. It is also a contribution to discussions about future topics of CIRP Research for Assembly.
