Abstract

The work deals with the X-ray crystallinity of different hydrocelluloses prepared by heterogenous hydrolysis of cotton-linters, spruce sulphite pulp, birch sulphate pulp, and a ball-milled cellulose. It was found that hydrolysis leads in general to an increase in the state of order of the different celluloses. The X-ray crystallinity of cotton-linters rose from 70 to 92 that of sulphite pulp from 51,5 to 72; in case of the sulphate pulp the crystallinity increased from 54,0 to 74,5. The hydrolysis of the ball-milled cellulose led only to a crystallinity-Index of 52. The hydrolysis product of cotton-linters was fractionated at different g-values; the different fractions showed great differences in their state of order measured by X-ray analysis. The degree of order of the fraction still existing in the colloidal state after centrifugation was found to decrease with increasing the g-value. The conclusion was drawn that the crystallinity of hydrocellulose is mainly a function of the state of order of the starting material.
