3D screen and stencil printing: Real mass production for metals, ceramics and their combinations
Abstract
Most additive manufacturing techniques lack of solutions for mass production and multi-material systems. An additional shortcoming of conventional powder-based methods is the small number of alloys and materials in use today. 3D printing process based on screen or stencil printing combines advantages of additive manufacturing with mass production. With the use of pastes there is no limitation regarding materials or powder shape, even the use of ceramics can be taken into account. The minimum structure dimension lies in the range of 80 to 100 μm with layer thicknesses between 10 and 600 μm depending on the process parameters. 3D screen or stencil printing allows for manufacturing precise and good surface quality parts in numbers. Build rates up to 100-120 cm3/h were already achieved and optimised industrial production may under certain circumstances reach build rates of 1000 cm3/h and more, depending on the part geometry and machine configuration.
