Today high brightness direct diode lasers are used for micro and macro-material processing applications as cost effective and efficient high power laser sources. One possibility of power scaling is to spectrally combine several diode lasers, which is possible without beam quality degradation. Another brightness scaling strategy is to use diode lasers as pump source for solid state lasers.
