We present an analytical model for diode-to-fiber coupling which allows us to simulate the coupling efficiency, possible losses and even predict qualitatively the intensity distribution at the exit facet of the fiber. The simulated results are presented and compared to experimental data and the theoretical results of a ray tracing program. The comparison focuses on a few-modes weakly guiding fiber and the differences between wave optical and geometric optical models.
