Abstract

This work presents first results of a research project aiming at the inline measurement of the thermal conductivity and the control of structural integrity of insulation materials produced by hot extrusion. In pilot experiments, blocks of insulation material are transported on a conveyor belt und heated by laser pulses or cooled by cooling fingers. Simple but robust algorithms enable an automated recognition and tracking of the excited areas and allow the measurement of their infrared radiation intensities. These are a measure or the rather complex time dependency of the surface temperature in the excited areas. After an initial phase presumably characterized by the semitransparency of the material, the intensities follow a well-understood proportionality to t-0,5 at least for some time, which allows the extraction of the thermal conductivity by fitting. Thus, the basic requirements for an inline measurement of the thermal conductivity by this technique are given.
