Abstract
A wide range on room fragrance products is available today and is commonly used in private homes, but also offices and public spaces. Depending on the scent delivery method of the products (passive evaporation, heating, spraying) substantial room concentrations of the carrier substances and the scentsubstances can be reached. In this study, the release of scent substances, solvent/carrier substances and by-products was measured in test chambers with a defined test protocol. Online instrumentation (PTR-MS, PAD, particle counters) were used to monitor quickly changing concentrations during use of the products. Several diffusers and sprays were tested, in all cases substantial concentrations of scent substances and solvents were detectable. Two products are presented in more detail, a spray intended for use in school classrooms, and a passive fragrance diffuser.
