Abstract
DE 19925085 C UPAB: 20010118 NOVELTY - Microbiological purification of contaminated gas streams comprises passing the gas over permeable substrates having part of their surface covered with microorganisms which decompose the adsorbed hydrophobic and hydrophilic contaminants, and a trickle film of water to remove hydrophilic waste products. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Microbiological purification of gases or gas mixtures comprises that the gas or gas mixture (5 ) is led over at least two carrier substrates (3), each with at least two surfaces and which are permeable to the components to be removed from the gas stream. Microorganisms (7) cover part of the surface of the carriers and a liquid is trickled over the microorganism-covered surfaces. The gas to be purified is led over the substrates in such a way that it is contacted simultaneously with the microorganism-coated and uncoated parts of the carrier surface so that the hydrophilic components of the gas/gas mixture are taken up by the liquid film on the layer of microorganisms while the hydrophobic components are adsorbed onto the regions of the carrier which are not covered with microorganisms and are then transported by diffusion to the microorganisms (7). The components removed from the gas stream are decomposed by the microorganisms. USE - The process and apparatus are used for purification of effluent air or effluent gases from natural or industrial processes. ADVANTAGE - The process allows both hydrophobic and hydrophilic harmful substances to be removed efficiently from gas streams followed by biological conversion into harmless low molecular weight compounds such as water, CO2 or ammonia.
