Ideals - Structures for Lifelong Learning
Abstract
The increasing power and efficiency of today's information technology (IT) gives the opportunity for new applications in the ducation and training sector. These trends will, in the future, create new markets and business opportunities. This will also influence the existing education and training periods of everybody s life. Our future vision is a global "infoverse" which homogeneously supports and integrates all types of learning and training within an IT based environment. To step forward into the direction of such an "infoverse" this presentation describes an approach, which aims at availability, effectiveness and long term use of courseware. In parallel, an efficient creation, re- and multiple use of courseware is supported. In order to achieve these objectives, a modular concept for courseware structure is introduced. Based on this concept of modular courseware a task-oriented process of courseware creation is described to support an efficient way of creating modular courseware. The realisation of these introduced concepts in the EU project IDEALS (Telematics Application Programme: ET 1012), is then presented. This realisation uses WWW distribution and presentation capabilities to enable an easy courseware access. The presentation of the demonstration experiences of the IDEALS partners in the area of Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME) and Institutes of Higher Education (IHEs) oriented learning and training show the good usage of the introduced models and concepts in a real life scenario. This includes the courseware design aspects, the methods, and the tools used for the production of the courseware components. This demonstration validates the presented concepts and proof the usability of the presented authoring process. Finally some of our further activities in the IT based learning and training area are outlined to show how the work of IDEALS continues and how someone could cooperate with us in this area.
