Abstract
The growing amount of WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) increasingly develops into a challenge for recycling management in industrialized countries. Especially the recovery of precious metals contained in WEEE is problematic. In this regard, pyrolysis enables a smooth decomposition of complex organic compound materials. This thesis is about the basic engineering process of a pilot plant scale pyrolysis reactor for the treatment of 30 kg WEEE material per hour. Based on references in specialist literature and the results of batch experiments different options for strategic process parameters, i.e. pyrolysis temperature and residence time of WEEE material in the reactor, are presented. In conclusion, a pyrolysis process at 450 to 500 °C and a one hour residence time are recommended. This configuration is supposed to guaranty a complete disintegration of plastics as well as to minimize toxic halogen emissions. Subsequently, the main components and constructional details of a digital prototype are described. Furthermore, different model scenarios are created to verify the potential of a newly developed heat exchange system. Results show that the internal heating system using ferrous pebbles as a heat transfer medium is capable to cover 40 to 70 percent of the required process heat.
