Experimental investigation of combustion, performance and emission characteristics of digestate pyrolysis oil in a compression ignition combined heat and power engine

In this study, pyrolysis oil produced from digestate in a pyrolysis and reforming process, the so called thermo-catalytic reforming, was blended with biodiesel and tested in an indirect injection compression ignition (CI) engine for combined heat and power (CHP) production. The properties of the pyrolysis oil were measured and compared with biodiesel. The CHP system operated under full and half electric load with biodiesel and a blend of 20 wt.% pyrolysis oil and 80 wt.% biodiesel. The specific fuel consumption with the blend was under half load 3% and under full load 4% higher when compared to pure biodiesel. The electric efficiencies for both fuels were nearly equivalent. The cylinder pressure diagram indicated stable operation with the 20% pyrolysis oil blend. Peak cylinder pressure of the blend was 2% lower than with biodiesel. Exhaust gas temperatures from the blend were up to 3% higher. The study concludes that a combined heat and power CI engine can operate with a blend of 20% pyrolysis oil and 80% biodiesel without modifications or necessity for additives.
