Abstract
Laminated floors are a well accepted product but have mainly been optimized regarding surface quality and sound insulation from the building. The emission of impact sound into the living room above the floor is still a problem addressed by the manufacturers. The characteristics of the sound are caused by an interaction of the source (e.g. a tapping foot or a falling ball), the laminate and the insulation material (floating or glued to the back of the laminate). WKI performs tests which are independent from resound effects in an anechoic test chamber. Initial experiments have been performed using a steel ball as an artificial source and a sound analysis system which gives a frequency spectrum of the impact sound in several time slices and in a wide frequency range according to the human ear. The maximum of the sound pressure and of the frequency of the impact sound are significantly different for floors with different types of insulation. The ongoing research aims at the development of standardized measuring procedures for comparisons between different floor materials.
