Abstract
Silicon nitride materials with tailored microstructures and grain boundary strength were developed using fine beta-Si3N4 powders. The correlation between microstructure and wear behaviour were investigated under dry sliding and rolling conditions. Beside grain size, the grain boundary strength and fracture toughness influence the wear behaviour. In addition to the friction and wear coefficient the depth of degradation under the wear trace after oscillating sliding stress was characterized by DIC microscopy. The test results show the potential of tailored nano-Si3N4- materials for applications in dry running ball or roller bearings or in bearings with marginal lubrication.
