This paper discusses current planning and scheduling hierarchies in customer-oriented semiconductor manufacturing and focuses on a common functional gap in the planning hierarchy: the missing integration of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) by Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) modules.
An overview of other gaps, e.g. those resulting from the interaction between scheduling and local dispatching procedures or multi-site co-ordination, is given, Insights into the topics discussed were gained from various projects carried out on behlaf of SMEs and big international players in the semiconductor industry.
This is followed by a section presenting the current research activities: a hybrid planning approach enabling the calculation of cycle times both at ERP (sales) and MES (manufacturing) level, thus improving the capable-to-promise capabilities. This approach mainly combines two parts: bucket-based backwards planning with continously running rough discrete forward simulation generating cycle time distributions. It is shown that the cobination used is able to overcome current performance problems without losing too much accuracy.
