This introductory report of the BelAmi project G4 "Runtime Adaptivity for Ambient Intelligence Systems" serves to establish a conceptual basis by discussing the concept of adaptivity.
There is a high demand for adaptive solutions in ambient intelligence (AmI) systems. As there can be disagreements about the term adaptivity, it is necessary to define what adaptivity means in an AmI context. Furthermore, there is a poor understanding of how to systematically implement adaptive systems under the constraints of a typical AmI system, such as severe resource constraints, or how to support group contexts adequately.
This report first defines what adaptivity means, especially for ambient intelligence systems, and outlines related concepts. After that, we go into more detail by describing how runtime adaptivity can be accomplished at a high level, that means, through architectural styles. The final part introduces low-level issues of adaptivity, concrete implementation mechanisms, which will be covered in more detail in a follow-up report.
