In the Fraunhofer IIS audio research labs a high number of loudspeakers (>120) in different listening and technique rooms (7) have to be connected to a number of audio playback computers (>15) or other audio playback devices (e.g. DVD and Blu-ray players). Different reproduction formats: e.g. two, five, eleven or twenty-two channels can be chosen. The adjustment of individual loudspeakers by level, delay and EQ has to be managed. Down-mix and bass management with several subwoofers are further requirements. User groups, with different kinds of expertise in sound engineering equipment, have to be addressed. Complex routings for continuously changing experimental setups are in use daily. For these requirements, the user interface of a standard audio mixing console is not adequately prepared and sufficient. Therefore a new kind of universal control interface software was designed and implemented to operate a large audio routing system (~2500 I/Os), with massive DSP power for audio processing. The design, implementation and usage of this interface is described in this work.
