Abstract
Following the ongoing global megatrends, namely the need for energy and resource efficiency, lightweight construction of end-user products and industrial equipment is imperative within a wide range of applications. Providing an outstanding ratio between mechanical properties and weight, magnesium alloys are facing a continuously growing demand for the use in automotive and other mobile applications. But the crystal structure of magnesium alloys results in a brittle behaviour, which is detrimental to a forming in cold state. Exceeding a minimum temperature, extra gliding planes are activated and formability is significantly improved. To provide a capable solution for the application of the material in industrial mass production, in-process temperature management strategies are required.
The article illustrates this approach for a range of different forming technologies.
