Titel
Internet of Things services in SCM exploring company roles for the development of IoT ecosystems
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to enhance the recent research activities about Internet of Things (IoT) services in Supply Chain Management (SCM). The realisation of that kind of service requires certain contributions from different companies. This paper groups different companies and proposes the basis for developing an ecosystem model for IoT services. Design/methodology/approach: An exploratory cluster analysis was conducted to explore different company roles. The member companies of the M2M Alliance, together with their value propositions, were used as the database as this particular alliance is significant in the IoT environment. Findings: The paper identifies different company clusters with their specific value propositions. Beside the description of relevant parts for an IoT service in SCM, this contribution gives an overview of the roles of the companies in a service creation process for the development of a practical oriented IoT ecosystem. Research limitations/implications: The analysis focused on the M2M Alliance and was conducted from a value proposition perspective. Future research should expand the number of companies and should investigate the roles from other perspectives, e. g. company relationships. Practical implications: The results group certain companies of the IoT market, allowing managers to gain an overview of value propositions, as well as gather suggestions about potential cooperation partners or benchmarking activities. Original/value: The paper presents company roles for the development of an ecosystem model for practitioners and researchers in the IoT and SCM field. The results support value creation considerations and are based upon an exploratory methodology.
