Abstract

WO2005033232 A UPAB: 20050520 NOVELTY - A flame retardant composition (A) for materials contains ceramic-forming additives (I) and volume formers (II). DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for the preparation of (A). USE - The use of (A) is claimed as a flame retardant for wood, steel, concrete or plastics. In particular (A) is useful for flame retardant treatment of wooden parts of buildings, e.g. staircases or roofing. (A) is specifically in the form of a paint based on polybutadiene resin, melamine-formaldehyde and/or radiation-hardenable lacquer (claimed). Also claimed are the use of (I) and/or (II) as mixture of materials in polymers (e.g. cable sheaths); and the use of (I) and/or (II), in the form of nanoparticles of grain size 1-150 mu m, for the production of transparent coatings. ADVANTAGE - On heating to a specific, controllable temperature (e.g. 100 deg. C), (A) softens and releases gas to form a foam; and on further heating (e.g. to 200 deg. C) forms a glassy ceramic (converted to a true ceramic at even higher temperature). These effects provide an effective flame-retardant finish, at relatively low cost. Flame-retardant protective coatings of (A) (e.g. on wood) have good properties for both indoor applications (e.g. transparency, light fastness, environmental acceptability and resistance to scratching, abrasion and moisture) and outdoor applications (e.g. weathering and soiling resistance, mosture- and UV-protective action and extensibility).
