How key innovators in hightech companies can be supported systematically in complex innovation processes
Abstract
Innovators in high-tech companies face a two-fold challenge: At the one hand, they are to develop innovative products, leaving the established scope of functionalities and offering as new and original customer benefits as possible. This requires innovators to leave well-established ways of evolutionary developing single product functionalities, but to deal with uncertainty and risks ofgreater innovation leaps. In other words, innovators have to think in terms of an innovation logic. At the otherhand, innovators deal with the current exploitation logic of their company, being involved in organisation structures, processes, behaviours and values which aim at establishing safety, reliability and efficiency of company performance. Innovators need to find their way through the confl icts between innovation and exploitation logic. However, without guidance and without suitable methods and strategies, the conflict of logics can lower innovators innovation performance considerably. The BMBF-funded project »Fast Adaptation of Technology in High-Tech Companies ThroughWork Organisation and Personnel Development START« focused on creating support forcompany experts engaged in innovation processes with challenges as described above. By defining fields of action in the areas of »Job design options«, »Management of goal conflicts« and »Innovationdriver roles«, suitable support measures have been identified and systematised. The contribution will describe these support measures and present their systematic provision to dynamic, informal and decentralised innovation processes, which go beyond the scope of traditional management methods.
