HVDC grids hold such an exciting yet problematic area for the worlds future power transmission. In this paper, the role of Information and Communication Technology for such an HVDC grid is examined within a Smart Grid communication perspective. Using a grid model for a pan-European-North African HVDC Grid, the usability and time domain characteristics of ICT for wide area networks are derived. The research provides initial measures to the availability and efficiency of wide area control and protection in an HVDC Grid.
