Abstract
As the availability of fossil fuels will decline within the near future, and additionally, all fossil fuels contribute to the climate change, substitutes must be found for each application. Lignocellulocic (residual) biomass is the most available source with a low GHG potenatial and therefore can be called best source for (oxygenated) hydrocarbons. It can be converted efficiently using the thermochemical pathway via gasification and synthesis. A general process scheme for decentralized conversion plants is presented and common challenges are addressed. To make such plants economic, it is necessary to develop and improve special catalysts for the synthesis of oxygenated hydrocarbons. Therefore, Fraunhofer UMSICHT installed a laboratory for the examination of such synthesis reactions under technical conditions. This new laboratory is initially used to investigate products like dimethyl ether (DME), poly(oxomethylene) dimethyl ether (POM-DME) or mixed alcohols (with ethanol as the major component). The respective catalysts will be prepared and screened by external partners in the sub-gram scale and afterwards tested in a continuously-operated laboratory plant with approx. 50 g catalyst. The results will lead to a refinement of the catalyst preparation and an adaptation to a future technical process. To extend the application area of the new laboratory, reactors for catalyst synthesis scale-up will be installed soon.
