Future BIPV Market(s)?!
Abstract
For decades architects, planners, engineers and scientists are emphasising the importance, the obvious need of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) for our future energy supply system. Despite this consciousness, the market share for BIPV on the PV market is still very small. New buildings and architectural show cases were in the past and are still areas of publications and projects. In 2009, the market share of BIPV remained very low (in Germany it was 1.5% of the total installed PV power [1]). Great efforts have been made in research and development into new products and new specific standards for BIPV to define this segment to promote and drive the market development. With the introduction of the European Directive Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, (EPBD) in 2010, a new area for research and development activities was opened. New forecasts estimate the installed power by BIPV from 2011 to 2017 to 4.6 GW worldwide [2]. Considering these numbers little progress can be observed and the outlook is positive. EPIA [3] stated in their report that 40 % of energy demand in Europe may be provided by roof and façade integrated PV installations. That means a potential installed capacity of more than 1500 GW with an annual electricity production of 1400 TWh [3]. The actual installed capacity is currently far away from these numbers. In this paper we describe an analytical approach of the building stock and give first sketches of a technical solution that is directly related to the analysis. Various building classes in the non-residential construction are the focus of the study. For example, the requirements and conditions are presented on the basis of a building class. The market potential of a generic product is shown. One factor of the (construction) industry that allows to accelerate development is standardization of products and services. Therefore it is discussed, the need of standardization of these compounds and the requirements for the (new) products. On the other hand, there are already the market for custom-made modular solutions, which is already helping to increase the acceptance of BIPV products. Questions about building geometries proportion of openings in facades, localization in the built and urban environment, the ease of installation and aesthetic qualities are examined. These parameters are evaluated to (new) BIPV relevant to define markets u / o and to find new BIPV to develop products for renovation of existing buildings and new construction.
