Abstract
DE 10324828 A UPAB: 20050126 NOVELTY - In making ceramic and/or powder metallurgical moldings (A), the mold(s) (B) consists (partly) of ice and inside and/or outside surface corresponds to negative of (A). (B) is coated/filled with same or different ceramic/powder metallurgical suspension(s) (C) whilst its surface is not less than 1 K below melting/sublimation temperature of the frozen liquid/gas and above or below temperature of (C). During and/or after this, (C) is dried, followed by sublimation or freeze drying. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for the following: (1) ceramic and/or powder metallurgical moldings (D) made by this process; (2) moldings (E) consisting partly of ice and partly of frozen (C). USE - The process is useful in the fields of classic and heavy duty ceramics, powder metallurgy and machine, vehicle and lightweight construction, e.g. for making compact or porous moldings for conversion to microreactors in chemical process technology, as membrane, including filtration membrane, or catalyst support, in environmental technology, as bone substitute in medicine or as complex molded tool or machine component. ADVANTAGE - The lost wax process is energy- and cost-intensive and causes pollution, whilst the wax is not normally re-used and volume change during melting can damage the ceramic or plaster shell. In all existing processes using frozen negative molds, the frozen mold must be removed from the model, which can cause damage, whilst closed-wall hollow moldings cannot be made. The present process is suitable for making complex massive, hollow open-walled and hollow closed-wall moldings. It is also possible to make structures with an aligned pore structure by very slow, directional freezing to grow large ice crystals, e.g. for making catalyst supports, filtration membranes and bone substitutes. Removing the ice by sublimation prevents volume changes typical of melting wax or water.
