Abstract
Shape memory alloys have great potential for use as an actuation material in miniaturized actuators for surgical instruments. Their performance and possible applications are discussed in this paper. A wire-based SMA actuator was designed and a controller for the wire-length was designed and implemented. The closed loop performance and possibilities for optimization are also discussed in this paper.
