Today’s fast changing markets require fast changing products, and fast changing products require adaptable production plants. For this, the so-called Plug-and-Produce (PnP) paradigm has been developed in the field of machine and plant construction [EN01]. But nowadays, the automation system becomes more and more the bottleneck for PnP: Each plant reconfiguration causes a high effort for adapting the automation system. The main reason for this are static and pre-planned structures in the software of the automation system. Modular, self-organizing software structures have been proposed as a solution [RSP+09] [WNFJ11]. A key element of those approaches is a semantic description of the plant and software modules. Based on such a semantic description, algorithms can compute a new configuration of the software system automatically. The scientific community introduced many heavyweight semantic solutions from SOA-Architectures to OWL inference systems [DL07][MD06][LSVH11]. So far little attention has been paid to find lightweight solutions. In this paper, we will analyze the cross communication between modules in a PnP scenario. Moreover, we will introduce a lightweight taxonomy to solve the problem of signal identification and an implementation based on industrial standards such as OPC UA [vdLGK11] and IEC 61131.
