High melting point bulk nanocomposites
Abstract
Nanostructured materials based on high-temperature melting compounds have been in the focus of research activity for many years. In particular, nanosized titanium nitride powders of different origins have been used in pressureless sintering1'3 and high pressure sintering4. Properties of TiN such as strength, hardness, fracture toughness, are very sensitive with respect to reduction of the grain size. Nanograined ceramics are expected to lead to the improvement of these properties compared to conventional coarse-grained ceramics. As for TiN experients showed increasing of hardness from 18 GPa for grain size 1-5 pm up to 28 GPa for grain size 30-40 nm. For this reason, the aim of this work was to investigate the densification kinetics, features of microstructure and properties of nano-TiN and bulk nanocomposite TiN-Si3N4.
