Going to and from school is a daily journey for millions of children around Europe. Crash statistics disclose that around 35 000 children are injured and 250 children are killed every year in Europe [1]. Modern ITS telecommunication technology can be applied to make the way to school safer. Nevertheless the research and development is lacking behind. Therefore the EU founded project SAFEWAY2SCHOOL aimed to develop new technologies, tools, trainings and services to enable a safer way to school for children.
This paper presents the holistic approach of the project. Devices and services for all user groups were developed and integrated in the system architecture using the FRAME approach and the V-ISO model. As an example the VRU unit is presented in this paper due to the high number of involved stakeholders. Presenting the results of the SAFEWAY2SCHOOL project, this paper showes a holistic approach how ITS technology can be used to enable a saver way for children to school.
