Titel
Deployment scenario for scalable video broadcasting over satellite
Abstract
Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and DVB-S2 Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) techniques form a good match for efficient TV broadcasting by satellite, in particular to avoid distributing the same content several times to different groups of users with different supported formats and quality of service (e.g. SDTV and HDTV) and for an efficient use of the satellite capacity. The deployment of such systems can however be challenging, especially when backward compatibility is required with existing services and legacy equipment. Starting from a summary of experimental results and after presenting a survey of different transmission schemes currently used for broadcasting TV channels by satellite, the paper investigates possible commercial deployment scenarios of SVC and VCM for satellite operators and suggests a possible technological roadmap. Services addressed range from enhanced broadcast services to integrated broadcast & interactive IPTV services. In the analysis, the pot ential evolutions of the video compression and broadcasting standards are also addressed.
