Abstract
In the process of designing an active load carrying system, a number of uncertainties are present. The aim of this study is to describe the in uence of existing uncertainties in the design process on the performance of the active structure based on piezoelectric actuators during its load-carrying application phase. As example, an active self-stabilizing structure, consisting of a clamped aluminium column exposed to a uniaxial loading is considered. The performance of this system strongly depends on the well tuned performance of the actuator, sensors and controllers of the active system, which can be assessed by the accuracy of the force-travel profile of the actuator. This paper examines how far the scatter of given piezoelectric actuator's characteristics will have an impact on the requirements of the self stabilizing structure.
