Abstract
Review of the most important monitoring projects on effects of pesticides on non-target organisms in Germany I. How many projects are available? II. Which approaches have been used for which kind of questions? III. Which type of effects were observed? IV. What is (or can be) the relation of monitoring to pesticide registration? Conclusions: - Underestimation of exposure? (Event driven sampling; coverage of applied active ingredients; consideration of dynamics); - Unrealistic hazard assessment? (Ecologically Acceptable Concentrations - EACs - instead of quality criteria; toxic units to consider mixtures; need for a public database with key concentrations used in registration); - High variability and cross correlation of ecological data? (careful selection of sampling sites; many samples or many sampling sites; regression instead ANOVA; measurements of other site specific factors; combination of different monitoring approaches); - "Ghost of disturbance past"? (Communities might be adapted to pesticides; use of undisturbed reference sites); - Is there a natural reference for a ditch? (Definition of minimum standards for agricultural landscapes; allows comparison of what is and what should be).
