Scanning laser range sensors are of increasing interest for the realization and improvement of driver assistance systems like pre-crash safety systems, intersection and lane change assistant, blind spot assistant, parking assistant or traffic jam assistant. However, cost aspects and space requirements have been major barriers for their integration into all vehicle segments. This paper describes the optical concept and the design of an omnidirectional lens as well as concept, design and fabrication of a low cost two-axis MEMS scanning mirror that aims at replacing the bulky and expensive conventional laser scanner in an automotive LIDAR sensor application.
