Abstract
The development of new and innovative plastic compounds is time-consuming as well as cost- and resource-intensive. Due to shorter product life cycles and the increasing product requirements, the compound recipes become more and more complex and tailored for certain applications in a very short space of time. In this context the variety of formulas effects that the experimental efforts for the material development increase excessively. Such development tasks are hard to master by using standard compound development methods. One approach to speed up the material development process is the transfer of combinatorial methods being known in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry to the compounding process. The main issue of this article is to introduce the idea of combinatorial compounding (cc) using a basic system having been realised for this purpose including the online test methods selected for characterising the system. These methods are based on mechanical online test ing and small angle light scattering online measurements. The data of both methods allow immediate conclusions related to the blend morphology influenced by changes in blend composition and processing parameters as well as resulting changes of the mechanical properties. The online testing described takes place directly at the flat film line following the compounding line. The options and benefits of combinatorial compounding and high-throughput screening are discussed by taking the example of a practice-oriented blendsystem consisting of polypropylene and a polyolefin elastomer.
