Problems of organ building and physical backgrounds
Abstract
While technical progress has found its way into other sectors of industry long ago, traditional ways of thinking and working still prevail in organ building. Most organ components necessary for the sound of the complex system of an organ are still manufactured manually with great effort and in a cost-intensive ways. The prime example is the construction of metal pipes. To manufacture this component is only possible by experienced and skilled organ builders. The author of this report has worked as an organ pipe builder for several years before he started work as a researcher of the organ. This is why he is acquainted with the general difficulties and problems of planning and manufacturing this organ component. First of all, it shall be described in the following, how the traditional planning of rows of pipes (stops) and their construction is conducted. Then, the problems arising in the process are explained. Finally, the influence of organ research on the work of organ building shall be described.
