Abstract
In this thesis, a spectroscopic technique is presented to enhance the sensitivity of absorption measurements by placing the absorbing analyte inside the cavity of a two mode laser. If only one mode is affected by the additional intracavity absorption loss, mode competition is disturbed and a redistribution of the optical power in both modes is obtained. As a consequence, the absorption signal is enhanced and thus the sensitivity is significantly increased. The main challenge of this measurement technique is to balance the laser losses and laser gain in both modes with large enough precision. Stable two mode laser oscillation has to be assured and at the same time the two mode system has to be very sensitive to additional perturbations of the laser dynamics caused by the additional absorption loss. The key innovation of this work is to control the mode competition between both lasing modes by optical injection of coherent light in one of the two modes. This way, the relative strength in mode competition of both modes can be adjusted with large precision via the frequency and the optical power of the injected light. In addition, stable two mode oscillation and mode hop-free frequency tuning is achieved. This work contains an extensive experimental characterization of the new spectroscopic measurement technique. In addition, a rate equation model for a two mode diode laser has been developed that includes effects of mode coupling by spatial hole burning, optical injection as well as additional intracavity absorption losses on one of the two modes. The sensitivity and spectral characteristics of the new measurement technique were demonstrated experimentally by measuring an absorption line of the oxygen A-band. Here, an enhancement in sensitivity with an enhancement factor in excess of 2000 could be achieved. This way, an effective absorption pathlength of 200 m could be reached inside a laser cavity with only 10 cm length. In contrast to spectroscopic methods based on passive cavities, the method presented in this thesis is almost insensitive to broadband losses inside the cavity affecting both modes in the same manner. Therefore it is well suited for measurements in hostile environments containing large amounts of dust or aerosol particles. As there is no need for any high-resolution spectral analysis of the lasers output spectrum, the new spectroscopic method is well adapted for the development of highly sensitive miniaturized spectroscopic measurement systems.
