Evaluation of elastic properties of micro- and nanostructures
Abstract

The increasing demand for smaller devices requires a continuous miniaturisation of functional components. The intention is for example the advance of the sensitivity of sensors and the rise of the frequencies of oscillators and switches as well as new applications. Therefor the research focuses on the material properties at the nano-scale. The mechanical properties of the materials are neglected so far. The few studies show inconsistent results, especially with regard to elastic properties. In this work the mechanical properties of different materials are discussed with emphasis on the influence of various aspects. This means size-effects and the consequences of material-, processing- and environmental influences. The employed materials are nanocrystalline diamond, the ignoble metal Tungsten, the noble metal Gold and the semiconductor Silicon. These materials are of nano-, single- and polycrystalline morphology. Measurable structures as bridges and cantilevers are fabricated using Top-down and Bottom-up techniques. These structures can subsequently be characterised by static and dynamic methods. At the beginning the theoretic models for the investigation of the assembled structures are presented with an emphasis on the beam-theory. This is combined with the introduction of the measurement principles as there are the atomic force microscopy, the magneto-dynamic principle and the laser Doppler vibrometry. Afterwards depending on the material the fabrication technique and the properties are explained followed by the assembly of the structures. Tungsten nanowires are obtained by the directional solidification of eutectics and gold nanowires are grown electrochemically or defined by electron beam lithography. Silicon nanowires are grown by low pressure vapour deposition. Subsequently the mechanical properties as the Young's modulus and strength of the nanowires are determined. No size effects have been found for the elastic properties. However, different influences could be identified which result in apparent modifications of the nanowire properties. This includes material properties, fabrication and environmental influences as well as effects of the measurement techniques. The consequences are scattering of data and apparent size effects. The plastic properties as yield and fracture strength of the materials are also affected.
