The case of laptop computers and photovoltaic modules
Abstract
The European project "Towards Zero Waste in Industrial Networks (ZeroWIN)" will examine and develop new and innovative approaches and effective strategies for the prevention of waste in industries based on industrial symbiosis. Industrial Symbiosis is concerned with regional collaboration of companies from traditionally separated sectors which exchange by-products, energy, water and materials in a manner such that the waste from one industry becomes raw material for another. The core of the ZeroWIN project form 9 industrial case studies in the automotive, construction and demolition, as well as electronics (laptop, photo-voltaic system) sectors, where key guiding principles for zero waste such as preventing pollution or minimizing waste are implemented. Adhering to zero waste principles products can be designed in accordance to D4R (Design for Recycling, Repair, Refurbishment and Reuse) criteria. This paper presents findings on D4R measures for two case studies: a D4R Laptop and a D4R Photovoltaic System. Based on a stakeholder dialogue with manufacturers and recyclers, a catalogue of dedicated improvement options for laptops and photovoltaic modules was developed. Design measures which facilitate ease of disassembly, the reuse of components, enable material recycling, extend the lifetime of the product, and minimize production waste or avoid toxic substances were identified. For each design option the technological constraints as well as environmental and economic implications were assessed. Technically feasible as well as economically and environmentally sustainable examples are presented in this paper. In the course of the ZeroWIN project participating companies will implement chosen D4R measures in their prototype products.
