This paper discusses some of the challenges faced by the automotive industry in dealing with the natural variation in input parameters and environmental factors that lead to scatter in results. We describe how a lack of consideration of this variation can lead to surprises during testing, with the associated risk of unplanned costs, an present a technique using Principle Component Analysis to improve the robustness of the CAE crash models.
