The present study is concerned with the macroscopic material response of solid foams and other highly microheterogeneous solids in the finite strain regime. For the homogenization of the microstructure, a strain energy based procedure is proposed. This procedure is subsequently employed for the analysis of the macroscopic behaviour of two-dimensional model foams. Distinct effects of a deformation induced cell wall re-alignment are observed which cannot adequately be included in pure small strain analyses.
