Titel
A detailed study of the microstructure formed during laser nitriding of Ti-6Al-4V under different gas atmospheres
Abstract
The various microstructures formed in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy during laser nitriding in dependence on the nitrogen content of the gas atmosphere were studied in detail by means of optical microscopy, electron microscopy (SEM, TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The study revealed new results on the microstructural and compositional state of both the metallic matrix and the various TiN x-phases formed during the solidification of the melt and by solid state reactions. The nitrogen content of the gas atmosphere was found to be a key processing parameter by which the structure and hence the properties of the laser nitrided layers can be controlled in a wide range.
