Titel
A novel approach to measure optical density in a hand-held pipette
Abstract
This paper presents the design and fabrication of a miniaturized light detection system for optical density measurements based on intelligent opto-electronic sensor technology. The design allows the implementation of light absorption and measurement schemes and can be potentially integrated as a modular approach in a hand-held pipette. The electronic circuit for optical density measurement was fabricated to incorporate a high intensity light emitting diode (LED) as a light source and an opto-electronic light intensity sensor, both controlled by a microcontroller. Optical density measurements were demonstrated using Coomassie Blue R250 dye in a flow-cell cuvette and in commercial pipette tips. We developed a test-rig that proves the feasibility of our approach to conduct optical density measurements in a hand-held pipette and verified our results with a commercial spectrophotometer.
