Titel
Molecular structure of PMDI-adhesives
Abstract
The adhesive systems used in the manufacure of timber products are generally described by their characteristic properties (e.g. solid content, pH-value, viscosity). This gives only a partial, inadequate description of their technological properties. To fill this knowledge-gap, methods of polymer analysis can usefully be emploved. The power of these analytical tools is demonstrated by studies of the structure and reactivity of PMDI. It is shown that PMDI is not solely polmeric 4,4'-PMDI and the molecular weight distribution and the molecular structure can have a great influence on the adhesive performance. Additionally, the more practical examinations like curing tests were found to be useful in characterising adhesive performance.
