Investigations on the stability of platinum nanostructures on implantable microelectrodes - A first approach

Abstract
The size of implantable electrodes for neuroprosthetic application is reduced to the order of micrometers attaining a large number of interconnections. Therefore high surface area materials are employed to reduce the electrode impedance, which helps to achieve good signal-to-noise ratio for the recorded signals as well as to inject high current during stimulation of nerves. Platinum black or platinized Platinum is a material that has been investigated for high surface area applications. The Platinum black can be electrochemically deposited on platinum electrode surfaces from a solution of hexachloroplatinic acid at room temperature. However, the stability of such coatings, especially over a long duration, is not known. This paper presents a first investigation on the stability of Platinum black coating for microelectrode application. The approaches explained here can be used as guidelines for similar investigations on nanostructured coatings on electrodes. The depositio n was done over Platinum coated surfaces to study the macroscopic influences of deposition, and over microelectrode structures developed for implantation inside animal model for the investigations. For improving the stability, the platinization was also done in the presence of ultrasound. A comparative study on the ultrasonic and non-ultrasonic Platinum black deposition is presented.
