Abstract
Increasing scarcity of resources and high energy costs have led to an increasing relevance of energy-efficiency over the last few years. While a lot of efforts are already being made to optimize energy-efficient production in large companies, there is still a lack of suitable support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
This paper describes the design of an IT System that aims to support SMEs in order to realize energy savings in production and to thereby help to increase SME competitiveness by reducing energy costs. The system is designed to provide decision support both in the planning and execution phases of production. This functionality relies on the combination of data provided by sensors, production orders and additional metadata describing the properties of the production systems. To allow portability of the system across different production system environments, a service oriented architecture is used. On the server side, specific services provide generic functionality like data management, sensor data and state data analysis. In the system's frontend, stakeholder interaction such as notification and system calibration is realized.
