In smart grid applications, a reliable communication infrastructure is crucial to allow smart metering and demand side management. If different utility meters (e.g. electricity, gas and water meters) and home automation systems use different and incompatible protocol waveforms for wireless communication, such an infrastructure is hardly realizable using state of the art communication technology. Thus, a cognitive gateway is required that is able to automatically recognize the protocol waveform used by an unknown transmitter and to translate the message into the waveform of the addressed receiver. This paper proposes a decision-theoretic algorithm for the automatic classification of wireless communication standards used for smart grid applications in the European 868 to 870 MHz band. The algorithm is adequate for the implementation in realtime embedded systems and works over a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios.
