Titel
Simulation of laser beam cladding by powder injection
Abstract
Laser beam cladding is successfully applied to the hardfacing of work pieces wit h wear and corrosion protective coatings, to the repair of wear damaged parts, and increasingly also in rapid prototyping and rapid tooling. Simulating the cladding process on a virtual engine may facilitate the estimation of process windows and save cost in manufacturing. The presented software predicts results of processing such as temperature distribution, powder loss, and bead dilution by simulating the powder preheating by the laser beam, the powder resorption in th e melt pool, and the heat transfer into the work piece, taking into account the influences of surface tension and gravity forces as well as of the temperature f ield on the bead shape. After each simulation run recommendations are derived fo r a stepwise optimization of processing.
