Abstract

Aim of the project was the preparation of the concept of soil biological site classification (BBSK) for the assessment of the soil function "Habitat for soil organisms" as stated in the German Soil Protection Act. The results can be summarised as follows: Determination of the most important soil biological site factors and their classes; Classification of the area of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland in ecotopes and their secondary aggregation; Derivation or improvement of the expected coenosis of eight organism groups by means of own sampling programs and literature data; Investigation of the use of a functional test (bait-lamina) as part of the BBSK concept; Sampling of eight organism groups at reprentatively selected 15 sites (10 forests, 4 meadows and 1 crop site) using standardised methods; Comparison of the expected with the actually found coenosis at the 15 sites, using different assessment methods depending on the organisms group (e.g. indicator species, maturity-index); Discussion of the results and suggestions for the improvement of the BBSK concept, e.g.: utilisation of differentiated maps for the various land use forms when they are available; Inclusion of more organism groups, especially nematodes and Collembola; Simplification of the BBSK concept by using a tiered system of increasing complexity when determining the soil biocoenosis.
