Fiber bragg gratings for strain and temperature measurement within microelectronics and mechatronics
Abstract
At Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration, Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) are used for online measurement of mechanical deformations and temperature changes within electronic packaging and mechatronic systems. Especially encpasulation processes with rapid prototyping materials like Stereolithography and Vacuum Casting can be monitored. A characterization of the material's and system's behavior under thermal and mechanical load can be determinated from the reflexion spectrum by experiments and numerical and analytical calculations. The paper discusses the relationship between the sensing system and its ability to detect structural changes like cracks and delaminations. By embedding the fibers directly into the polymer object the sensor can be used for continuous lifetime monitoring of the system, starting with real-time cure monitoring during production processes and ending with structural health monitoring during product lifetime.
